What Pirates Teach Kids About Money

Ask the kids:

Why might pirates ignore some laws, but choose to follow their own rules? Would life aboard a pirate ship prove easier, if pirates obeyed just a few rules?
Ask the kids:

If a pirate stood to earn a share of a pirate ship’s profits, do you think they might work a bit harder, to make sure their voyage was profitable?
Ask the kids:

Can you think of other dangerous jobs, where lucky people can make a lot of money, then retire? Racing car driver? Boxer? Do the risks outweigh the benefits?
Ask the kids:

Today, the most valuable coin we have in circulation would only buy us a comic or a toy. Why do you think we don’t use very valuable coins any more?
Ask the kids:

An earlier set of explorers claimed to have spotted this galleon’s final resting place a few years back, but they could never agree on how to split the treasure with the Colombian government. What do you think the share should be? 50/50? All for the finders? Or should the finders just get a finder’s fee from the Colombians?
Ask the kids:

Somalia is quite a poor country, and many of the ships passing by are very valuable. If Somalia was a bit richer, do you think it would have fewer pirates?
