The price of a couple of cinema tickets might be outside of most kids’ pocket money budget. However, if you have some family favourite DVDs or access to streaming services, kids can set up their very own movie night for their special person.
Have them pick out some options, write these down on some paper as ‘cinema listings’, and let the adult choose the film. Then, get settled down with snacks from the cupboards, or some cheap store bought popcorn or treats, to immerse yourselves in an at-home-cinema!
If the kids are movie-fanatics, why not talk to them about what movies can teach kids about money?
Sure, most of us wish the kids would do this more than as a one off – cleaning around the house can be more helpful than kids realise! But making a bigger effort on or around Mother’s Day itself will 100% be a gift they’ll love.
Get the kids to help tidy around the house, or do other household tasks. From cleaning their room or tidying the kitchen, to hoovering the floors or walking the dog – there are plenty of ways for kids to show their appreciation through helping tick off some of the family to-dos. If you’d like some ideas, check out our list of appropriate chores for primary aged kids.
At first glance, you must think we’re crazy to recommend a picnic in March in the UK. However, if the weather is nice, a last minute kid-organised adventure into the garden to eat some sandwiches is sure to make their parent smile.
Get the kids to make up some sandwiches and snacks (with the aid of another family member, to avoid some wild concoctions), grab a blanket and head outside to enjoy their thoughtfulness. If the weather isn’t up to scratch, they could sort a Mother’s Day lunch for the family with their (best presented) sandwiches and crisps. Additionally, why not even try their hand at a baked treat?
There are plenty of easy-to-follow recipes for delicious treats that kids try (with some adult supervision!). While messy, it’s the thought that goes into baking that’ll make it even sweeter. And a good tidy up after is sure to please too! These jam tarts should be easy for the kids to make as a special treat.
A staple of any special day, you can’t go wrong with some breakfast in bed! The kids don’t need to get the hob or oven fired up, as toast that’s spot on and a perfectly brewed cuppa will go a long way. If they’re feeling adventurous, they could head out to the shop to buy some pancakes or fruit pastries!
If they’re still in the helping mood post-Mother’s Day, why not talk to them about helping others?
