Elizabeth uses RoosterMoney with her two kids (Christopher, 13 & Emmanuel, 10) to help manage their pocket money, spending and chores routine. We asked them a few question to find out how they make the most out of RoosterMoney, so you might be able to pick up a few tips for your family.
1. Did you give pocket money before starting RoosterMoney? π°
No, the boys never used to get pocket money. I would always buy what they asked for and gave them money when they wanted it.
2. Why did you start using RoosterMoney? π²
For Christopher it was mainly to be able to buy items he needed with his own card, as he often didn’t have enough cash on him when he was out and about. I also wanted to encourage both boys to do more chores around the house and earn some money for their own spending.
3. How do you use RoosterMoney in your family? π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦
The boys have chores they need to do to get their allowance, but they can also negotiate additional money for extra chores. It’s very convenient as an allowance is given weekly automatically but I can also add extra money when needed.
“The boys have chores they need to do to get their allowance, but they can also negotiate additional money for extra chores.”
4. What chores routine do you follow in your house? π§Ή
For making their bed everyday they get their regular allowance on a Saturday.Β For other chores like dishwashing and sometimes meal preparation, an additional allowance is negotiated. And lastly, anything they volunteer to help with, be it hoovering or putting the washing out, is an extra chore that could earn them an extra bit of money.
5. Any tips for our readers on how to mange a successful chore routine? π©βπ
Make sure the chore is completed before the allowance is given. It has enabled the boys to be more responsible.
“It’s very easy to use, and it’s great that I get notifications whenever the kids use their card.”
6. Whatβs your favourite feature in the app? π²
Being able to add allowance or deduct money from their accounts.
7. What's your favourite thing about the card? π³
It’s very easy to use, and it’s great that I get notifications whenever the kids use it.
“Encourage your kids to do a little more work for a little more money, they’ll gain a lot of valuable experience in the process.”
8. What does your child use their Rooster Card for the most? πΈ
It’s a mix really between online purchases and paying for items in a shop. He’s also been able to withdraw money from an ATM.
9. How do you manage your childβs use of the Rooster Card online? Any tips for our readers? π»
He often lets me know what he wants to buy online. We look at the websites together and then we both agree before he goes ahead and makes the purchase.
10. Any tips for our readers on how to get the most out of RoosterMoney in general? π
I’d say it’s good to have a limit on what you give, but be open to negotiation. Encourage your kids to do a little more work for a little more money, they’ll gain a lot of valuable experience in the process.
“Where the boys used to ask for items and I willingly bought anything for them (within reason), they now seem to ask how much money they have instead.”
11. How has RoosterMoney helped you as a parent? Has it made life easier? πββοΈ
Yes, RoosterMoney has given me peace of mind. I know that he always has money to buy an item he may want for school without having to wait for me to come home. Sometimes the shops would have been closed. I can top it up anywhere and at anytime.
12. Has RoosterMoney changed your kids' understanding of money? π
Yes, where the boys used to ask for items and I willingly bought anything for them (within reason), they now seem to ask how much money they have instead. They budget and only use the money they have to buy what they want or wait until they have earned enough to buy what they want.
13. Give us your top pocket money or chores tip to share! βοΈ
I don’t really have a specific tip but I let the boys negotiate how much I can give them for additional chores, which seems to work. Currently, they’re happy to earn money.
